About Us

The name Avalon Psychology was inspired by the Arthurian legend of Avalon, a mythical island. Specifically, the island has been said to be the place where Arthur’s magical sword, Excalibur was forged, where Arthur went to recover after being gravely wounded following the Battle of Camlann, and purportedly, where the Holy Grail may be found.

Our Values

Thinking Slow about Fast Thinking

Noticing our automatic thoughts without judgment, recognizing the importance of those thoughts, and making use of them in the therapy, supervision, and consultation room.

Change Happens in the Therapist First

For meaningful therapy to occur, the therapist must be brave enough to confront themselves in a way that most people seldom do. They must be able to be willing to confront their ways of thinking, feeling, and acting, and belief structures. Therapy works best when the practitioner can deeply connect with the client’s experience, and we believe that knowledge of our selves is needed in order to understand someone else in a way that is healing.

Using Our Whole Self

Meaningful therapy is a direct, whole-self (soma and psyche) contact between two (or more) individuals. Insight, understanding, and change, occurs when both parties’ experiences are deeply understood and communicated to one another.

Knowing Our Limits
Focus on Meaningful Insight, Not Quick Solutions

Usually, change comes through deep understanding and exploration. Most often, sitting in not knowing where to go next is more important than trying to please the client by providing a solution that they likely have already thought about and dismissed.

Rome was not built in a day, and a pie cannot be eaten in a single bite. The process of change is a process, and we are not always ready for the next step. It’s important for us to know when to say that we’ve gone as far as we want to go.
